Mark McGwire had eclipsed Roger Maris' record five days earlier. Now, it's 29-year-old Slammin' Sammy Sosa's turn. It's September 13, 1998, at Wrigley Field in Chicago. Sosa passed Babe Ruth earlier in the game with a 2-run, fifth-inning homer. Now it's the ninth. There is 1 out and the bases are empty.
Product Features
The Cubs™ are trailing 10-8 as they continue to battle for a spot in the National League™ playoffs. The pitcher is righty Eric Plunk. The count is 2-and-1. The pitch is a fastball, and Sosa smacks it 480 feet to left for No. 62! The crowd of 40,846 at Wrigley erupts as Sosa circles the bases. A 6-minute delay follows as fans litter the field while chanting "Sam-mee! Sam-mee!" The Cubs' rightfielder emerges from the dugout for 3 curtain calls. When all quiets down, the Cubs go on to win the game 11-10 on Mark Grace's 10th-inning homer. (Reference photo provided by Steven Schwab.)Features
