Shortly after the euphoria of the magical 1995 season, The State Legislature of Washington and the public agreed to provide substantial support for a new state of the art ballpark to keep the Mariners™ in Seattle. On July 15, 1999, the city of Seattles' ninth professional ballpark, and new home to the Mariners, was unveiled as the gates opened for an interleague game against the San Diego Padres™.
Product Features
The 22 years of Kingdome lore, with its Astroturf, falling ceiling tiles, stuffy climate, and leaky roof, were memories seen beyond left field when Seattle's Jamie Moyer hurled the first pitch to San Diego's Quilvio Veras. Now, the Mariners had a 47,000 seat open-air stadium with an architectural triumph to protect a natural grass field. The retractable roof covers the field in 3 sections with the largest span measuring 655 feet, or nearly the equivalence of 2 football fields. The roof, measuring 8.9 acres, uses 128 wheels and 96 motors to enclose the field in as fast as 8 minutes. Among all the state of the art attractions, visitors can check e-mail, observe over $1.37 million in public art, and hear train horns emanating from nearby Union Station. With the increased fan support, the Mariners look to roll into the millennium at one of the games best ballparks.Features
