Mariner™ fans dreamed of a playoff series for 19 years. On October 8, 1995, that dream reached a pinnacle in the decisive game of the American League™ Division Series against the wild card New York YankeesŪ.
Product Features
Defying the odds ever since they were 12 and a half games out of first place on August 15, the Western Division champion Mariners beat the odds again with 2 runs in the eighth inning to tie the game. In the top of the eleventh, New York quieted the 57,411 frenzied Kingdome fans with a run off Mariner ace Randy Johnson, who was pitching in relief on one day's rest. But, in the bottom of that inning, the Mariners struck back for a final time. Edgar Martinez laced a Jack McDowell pitch into the left field corner that easily scored Joey Cora from second with the tying run. On the play, Ken Griffey Jr. left first base, never broke stride, and slid home to complete the unthinkable, sending Seattle to the AL Championship against Cleveland, and, above all, causing pandemonium. The next morning, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer hailed the conquering heroes with a front page headline, in the largest type since the end of World War II, that simply stated "M's Do It!" The series is remembered for the on the field battle, and also for the game that saved Major League™ Baseball in the Pacific Northwest.Features
